Academic Choice

Academic Choice offers a core curriculum of academic classes while allowing access to the full range of language and arts electives offered at Berkeley High School. The typical Academic Choice class follows a seminar approach, which encourages intellectual curiosity, analytical thinking, and a close working relationship between student and teacher. AC curricula will include strategies that invite students to ask questions and draw inferences; develop techniques for critical thinking and analytical writing; encourage different levels of questioning; synthesize perspectives from different points of view; and teach construction of good written and verbal arguments.

The courses that make up Academic choice share common traits:

  • Clear, measurable outcomes and objectives
  • Stated curriculum, including standards for student work
  • Student and teacher expectation that students are preparing for study at a college or university.
  • Preparation for success at the highest levels of standardized testing, including AP and SAT-II
  • A significant research component to student work
  • Regular summation time spent with students discussing and writing about what they have learned, how it relates to their other subject areas, and how it relates to their future plans
